Pathways to a new Victorian social housing framework

On 30 April, the Victorian Government began an extensive consultation process on the future of social housing in Victoria, as part of its commitment to develop a new housing framework better suited to our communities’ needs.

To assist with considering the complex issues involved, the Government published two discussion papers: Pathways to a fair and sustainable social housing system and Social Housing a discussion paper on the options to improve the supply of quality housing. A summary of the key issues in the discussion papers is also available in 11 languages.

The Director of Housing wrote to all public housing households about the consultation process, how to access the discussion papers and provide feedback. This letter was available on the DHS website and through DHS Housing Offices in languages other than English.

Eleven consultation sessions for public housing tenants and interested members of the community were held during June and July in Ashwood, Ashburton, Ballarat, Bendigo, Churchill, Collingwood, Footscray, Geelong, Moorabbin, Shepparton and Wonthaggi. Information about these sessions was advertised in newspapers throughout the region, on the DHS website and distributed to tenant groups and the community. Interpreters were available at these sessions upon request.

Three round table discussions with key housing stakeholders and eight consultation sessions for local service providers were also held during the consultation.

A dedicated toll free information line was established so that tenants could access further information, request a copy of the discussion papers or information in another language. Over 2,000 copies of the discussion papers were distributed to people who requested them and the information line responded to over 2,200 queries.

The Government has received more than 1,200 submissions and over 560 people have participated in consultation sessions.

The Government thanks all who participated in the consultation process, particularly the tenants at the heart of our social housing system. There is much valuable feedback, information and advice to consider and discussions will continue with representatives from peak organisations and the housing sector throughout the policy development phase.
