Systemic reform to improve outcomes for children and families

Child and adult holding handsThe Minister for Families and Children, Jenny Mikakos has announced the beginning of a significant reform of the service system that supports vulnerable children and families.

Roadmap for Reform: Strong Families, Safe Children will set the directions for a long-term reform of the child and family services system.  These will include how we can: 

  • prevent neglect and abuse
  • intervene early to prevent issues escalating support families through crises to recover
  • respond most effectively to secure better futures for children who can’t live at home.

In response to recommendations of the Auditor-General’s report, Early Intervention Services for Vulnerable Children the Roadmap will also include a review of early intervention and support services for vulnerable children and families.

Consultation with service partners and users of the service system is planned to take place in September with additional input available throughout the process. An Expert Advisory Group, chaired by the Secretary, Department of Health & Human Services will provide specialist advice on the development of the Roadmap and to ensure the strategic directions of the Roadmap are consistent with contemporary evidence.

Deloitte has been appointed to provide expert leadership and analysis, bringing significant expertise across social policy and economic modelling to the project.
