Peer to Peer: Supporting young women to recognise, respond to, and challenge violence against women

Date published: 2009-09-24 15:25:55

The P2P project consists of a series of workshops that aim to support young women, to recognise, respond to and challenge violence against women and to promote healthy, safe and respectful relationships. P2P recognises that young people are a vital source of support for their peers and therefore aims to support young women to develop the capacity to be effective supports and ‘hubs of information’ in their peer groups, social networks and communities.

Research shows that young people are most likely to ask each other for help/support before contacting other adults or specialist agencies and that young people provide strong reinforcement for each other’s behaviour, both positive and negative. P2P also recognises that young women already possess a range of skills and knowledge, therefore the aim of this project is to consolidate and build on these existing skills and to assist participants to develop new ones.

Information for potential participants is below; please distribute widely among your youth networks: do you want to know more about how abuse affects young women in your community, and how you can help? want to gain skills and knowledge and build your CV at the same time?

If you're between 18 and 24 years, come along and be involved in a new project that looks at ways to recognise, respond to and challenge violence against women. Food to share, professional certificate of participation, & gifts provided!

Three workshops will provide opportunities for:

  • skills development
  • knowledge and information sharing
  • peer education skills development
  • open discussion
  • confidence building

in an open and supportive environment.

Date: Wednesdays 5:30-7:30pm, 7-21 October 2009

Venue: NMIT Preston Campus

The project is co-funded by Women’s Health in the North and a grant from the Knowledge Transfer and Partnerships Office of the University of Melbourne. For more information, you can email or contact Erin, Andrea or Johanna on 0402 540 739 or 0401 395 642 or 0420 419 499.
