The Private Hospitals and Non Emergency Patient Transport Unit is responsible for
- the development and implementation of private hospital and day procedure centre policy
- administrate private hospital and day procedure centres regulations
- the development and implementation of legislation, regulations and guidelines relating to private hospitals and day procedure centres
- administration of non-emergency patient transport regulation
The unit administers the registration system for private hospitals, day procedure centres and non-emergency patient transport providers and is responsible for the processing of applications relating to registration, transfer or renewal of registration, and construction/alterations of private health facilities and non-emergency patient transport providers.

The unit is also responsible for providing advice and information to the sector on how services may achieve better compliance with the provisions of the relevant legislation, that is, the Health Services Act 1988 (the Act) and the Health Services (Private Hospitals and Day Procedure Centres) Regulations 2002, Non-Emergency Patient Transport Act 2003 and Non-Emergency Patient Transport Regulations 2005.
The unit monitors the performance of private hospitals and day procedure centres and non-emergency patient transport providers with regard to the Act, and conducts site visits of registered facilities.
