The Senior Nursing Advisor provides expert advice to the branch, other program and policy areas, and DHS regional offices on issues relating to rural nursing and the nursing impact on rural health services delivery.
The Senior Nursing Advisor works collaboratively with the Principal Nurse Advisor, Director of Nurse Policy Branch, to ensure that the Victorian health care system is supported by an educated, experienced and skilled nurse workforce of an adequate size and distribution to meet the needs of the public. The Senior Nursing Advisor consults widely with the rural health service sector and key stakeholder groups on matters related to clinical service delivery and nursing, and acts as a conduit between the department and the rural nursing executives.
Key areas that the Senior Nursing Advisor’s work is currently focused on include:
- Advancing rural nursing practice to strengthen the resilience of rural health services and bush nursing centres, particularly with respect to managing unplanned presentations
- Developing the leadership capacity of rural nursing, focusing on workforce planning, change management and informing government policy
- Reviewing legislative and policy frameworks to enable rural nurses to operate at their fullest capacity
- Supporting and facilitating collaborative approaches to defining roles and scope of practice of nurses in rural health services
- Getting evidence into practice in rural health services and bush nursing centres.
The Senior Nursing Advisor is a member of a variety of internal and external committees including the State Clinical Risk Management Reference Group, the Clinical Skills Advisory Committee, the DHS Nurses Network, the Remote Area Nursing Emergency Guidelines Review Committee, the Departmental Education Liaison Committee and the Monash University Bachelor of Nursing Rural Health Practice Advisory Committee. The Senior Nursing Advisor also facilitates the Victorian Small Rural Health Service Directors of Nursing Group.
