Supported Residential Services (SRSs) form part of a spectrum of supported accommodation options that operate in a range of service areas, including:

  • aged care (nursing homes and hostels)
  • mental health
  • disability
  • housing
  • drug treatment
  • correctional
  • post acute care services.

The Department licenses the proprietor of an SRS and regulates their activities through the Health Services Act 1998 and the Health Services (Supported Residential Services) Regulations 2001. Other State regulatory requirements govern fire safety and food handling and storage.

The SRS Program is a regionally focused program. The Department employs SRS Advisors in each region to monitor compliance with the Act, the Regulations and any Conditions on Registration. Advisors also facilitate appropriate standards of care for residents through the provision of information and advice to proprietors and staff. The central office program area supports the Regional work.

The Government’s approach to partnership in the SRS sector recognises that SRSs are significant providers of supported accommodation services and centres around 5 key directions:

  • Improving services to residents
  • Support to SRS proprietors
  • Facilitating industry sustainability in the pension-only segment of the industry
  • Improved regulatory processes
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders

The SRS Program's work is focused on delivering on these 5 key directions.
