Risk Managment Unit
The Department of Human Services has a Risk Management Policy and Framework to support better decision making, business planning and resource allocation.
Risk management is an essential part of the governance structure of the department, and is a requirement under the Financial Management Act 1994 and the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority Act 1996.
Risk Management Policy
The department is committed to, and places a high priority on, managing its risks in a strategic and systematic manner. It is departmental policy to apply a consistent and comprehensive framework to the management of risk.
A systematic and strategic approach to risk management will support and foster:
- the department's mission to enhance and protect the health and well-being of all Victorians, emphasising vulnerable groups and those most in need
- achievement of the department's strategic objectives through efficient and effective operations
- provision of a safe environment for the department's clients and employees
- the department's values, especially quality and responsibility - that we always strive to do our best and improve the way we do things; and that we commit to the actions we take to achieve the best possible outcomes for our clients
- compliance with all statutory requirements and obligations relating to risk identification, assessment and control.
Risk Management Framework
The Risk Management Framework provides a strategic and systematic approach to:
- identifying potential risks;
- assessing exposures;
- developing processes to mitigate or manage risks; and
- monitoring and reporting on risks throughout the department.
A departmental Risk Management Committee, chaired by the Executive Director, Operations, is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Framework and for providing advice and guidance on risk management issues.
