Overview of the department
The Department of Human Services employs more than 13,000 people and is involved in the planning, funding and provision of health, housing and community services for the State of Victoria. Most services are provided by agencies (employing more than 80,000 people) under funding and service agreements with the Department. These include
- public hospitals
- ambulance services
- community health centres
- local government
- aged care facilities
- mental health
The department also provides some services directly, in particular public rental housing, intellectual disability and client services, child protection, and youth justice. The department's regional structure comprises eight regions, three based in the metropolitan area and five in regional Victoria.
