The department recruits graduates each year through the Victorian Public Service Graduate Recruitment Scheme to meet its need for high achieving graduates. The overall program is coordinated by the State Services Authority (SSA) which is a central authority that oversees departments in the Victorian Public Service.
The Graduate Recruitment Scheme recruits recent graduates at degree, diploma and post graduate level with 65% or higher academic result.
Graduates will be employed on an on-going basis and complete 3 four month placements during the course of the scheme.
As a Department of Human Services graduate the initial placement is within the department in the role to which the on-going appointment is made. Thereafter, the remaining two placements are usually with other Victorian Public Service departments. Graduates then resume back with Human Services in their on-going role.
The Department of Human Services generally adopts a flexible approach to rural placements as part of the Graduate Recruitment Scheme. With five rural regions, all with offices in both large and small towns, every effort will be made to accommodate rural graduates in local placements that suit.
Some of our 2008 Graduate Recruits have given their views on the program, see 2008 testimonials.
Graduates are recruited into a range of roles that cover:
Placement vacancies for the Scheme will be advertised around March via the Age newspaper, various internet sites and also major Universities throughout Australia. Short listing and testing occurs in April/May and all successful graduates will commence in February of the following year.
