Jobs that make a difference

2008 testimonials

Some of our 2008 Graduate Recruits have given their views on the program:

"I feel very fortunate to come into my career in the Victorian Public Service through the Graduate Program. The amount of support given to Graduates is enormous. Having a buddy to meet and chat with in the first couple of weeks was a great way to feel more at ease, and a great opportunity to ask questions of someone who had been through the same experience. The mentor relationships set up through DHS are incredibly valuable and I personally look forward to a long relationship with my mentor throughout my career."

"The work that has been given to me has been interesting and challenging. Having the opportunity to rotate to other departments has given me a great insight into the workings and cultures of other departments. I have also formed ideas about what kind of work I wish to pursue in the future."

"The graduate program has been a great opportunity for me.  My managers have been friendly and helpful, and willing to answer my questions when asked. The work that I have been tasked with doing has been varied and interesting, and I feel like I'm making a real contribution to my team."

"As a graduate, the training opportunities I have been afforded have been excellent, and have served both to increase my technical knowledge and knowledge of how to work in government. I would recommend the GRAD Scheme to anyone who is looking for a great start coming out of university."

"The rotational aspect of the VPS grad program is very beneficial.  It allows you to sample other areas of the government and broaden your perspective and experiences.  The type of work provided to me has varied.  Some has been mundane but some has been challenging and interesting. The DHS and SSA mentoring programs are excellent.  As with most things, you get out what you put in but it gives you the chance to have access to people you would not normally have at a graduate level.  Having both a DHS mentor and a non DHS mentor has been great in that one can give you the tips and tricks to working in DHS and the other can provide a broader VPS view."

"A big positive to the graduate program (at least for DHS grads) has been the all the events and trips are organised by the graduate coordinator.  Now that I am no longer in DHS I really appreciate the support we received."

"An advantage of the grad program is the sense of support you get from belonging to this group called 'graduates'.  As new entrants to working in government it can be confusing and lonely at times.  However, having this group of peers (especially in DHS) that you regularly meet up with and who are in the same position as you is great.  It creates a sense of camaraderie and also an instant network."
