Doctors’

Dandenong Hospital has launched
a work experience program giving students a realistic look at what it takes to
become a doctor.
The hospital has formed a
partnership with Dandenong High School in a bid to keep talent local.
Led by Southern Health’s Dr
Andrew Block, students from Dandenong High School have been placed with medical
experts in outpatients, radiology, pathology and on the wards.
‘Students have had a real-life
taste of what it takes to become a doctor and it’s been a really uplifting and
positive experience for all involved.’
Dr Block said it was important
hospitals maintained a strong relationship with their community.
‘If you draw people from the
community and train them, they will usually want to return.’
The selection process was
conducted by the school with 11 making the final cut for this year’s intake.
Dr Block conducted an
information seminar for parents and students at the school—also attended
by Monash University representatives—a week before the program kicked
off.
‘This is a great example of
communities working together to make a difference where it matters,’ Dr Block
said.
