Senior Victorians from diverse
backgrounds will have better access to the latest information on aged care
services thanks to a new $50,000 directory.
Visiting Moorleigh Community
Village in East Bentleigh Senior Victorians Minister Lisa Neville launched the
Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria’s Multicultural
Aged Care Services Directory 2009.
‘More than 21 per cent of Victoria’s aged population speaks a language
other than English and, within two years, 38 per cent of Melbourne’s
seniors will be from culturally-diverse backgrounds.
‘This new directory will make it
simpler for seniors from different cultural backgrounds to access vital aged
care services and maintain their independence.’
The Multicultural Aged Care Services Directory 2009 was
compiled by the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria with funding from the
Home and Community Care (HACC) Program.
This is the third edition of the
directory.
Ms Neville said the directory
lists services, clubs and organisations, interpreting and translation services,
media and aged care providers for seniors from culturally and
linguistically-diverse backgrounds.
‘The latest edition is easier to
read and includes more contact details and an explanation of the aged care
system,’ she said.
‘Along with more than
450 ethno-specific senior citizens’ clubs and community organisations, the
directory also brings together the most up-to-date contact information on
government services for multicultural seniors.’
HACC funding provides services
including domestic assistance, personal care, allied health such as physio and
podiatry, delivered meals, nursing and social support.
