Games older people play to
maintain good health

The Planned Activity Group
program at Darebin Community Health is taking part in a research project
conducted by LaTrobe University.
The research aims to determine
if there are any health benefits to using the Nintendo Wii in the older
population.
There is much anecdotal evidence
to suggest Nintendo Wii can increase older people’s strength, mobility and
social interaction.
The Nintendo Wii allows all
people, even those with acquired brain injury and dementia, to participate in activities which are recognisable, long-ago
pursuits, such as tennis, bowls and golf.
Group coordinator Fay Reynolds
obtained a State Trustees grant to buy televisions and Nintendo Wii (including
games, controllers and accessories) for two Darebin Community Health sites with
the research project in mind.
Her team has developed weekly
activity programs to increase health outcomes and promote independence.
The team is also planning a
structured, intergenerational program for group participants and older children
from local primary schools to increase understanding, interaction and
involvement.
