A new facility in Ringwood will provide an important
resource for young people with mental health problems.
Minister for Health
Bronwyn Pike joined local mental health specialists, staff and
clients to officially open the new groupworx facility on the site
of the Wundeela Centre in Ware Crescent, Ringwood.
groupworx is the
new name for the Adolescent Day Program as part of Child and Adolescent
Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
It offers intensive
group therapy for young people aged between 12 and 18 living in
Monash, Maroondah, Whitehorse, Knox and Yarra Ranges.
Usually young people
attend the program for four hours a day, three days a week, for
eight weeks.
Community CAMHS provide
assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and their families
experiencing social, emotional, psychological and mental health
problems.
Treatment may include
family therapy, parent counselling, individual therapy, group
therapy and medication where necessary.
'The facility is
part of the Government's investment in youth mental health, strengthening
early intervention for young people at risk of developing serious
mental health problems,' Ms Pike said.
'The name chosen
for the new facility, groupworx, emphasises the healing power
of the group.
'We know services
like CAMHS can tackle mental health problems before they become
further entrenched, reducing stress on families and carers.'
The Adolescent Day
Program was previously located at Maroondah Hospital.
The Government provided
$314,000 to build groupworx a new home as part of the expansion
of mental health services at Maroondah Hospital.
As part of this expansion,
a new $32.1 million 50-bed adult acute facility at Maroondah Hospital
will also be built.
