Listeners to RRR's weekly
Radiotherapy
program will be familiar with Dr Mal Practice, BabyDoc and Dr Malice.
They may not know
they are the voices of Alfred Hospital staff who for 10 years
have explored the lighter side of medicine through panel discussions,
expert interviews and casual conversation between colleagues.
Primary Mental Health
Consultant Psychiatrist Rob Selzer, who founded the program, said
it was born out of a desire to bring specialist clinical issues
into everyday discussion.
'The idea was to
demystify medical and psychiatric issues and also to show that
specialists are normal people,' Dr Selzer said.
'It's a relaxed formatwe
don't want to teach or preach to people, we just basically have
discussions between ourselves that are, hopefully, interesting
to other people as well.'
Topics include anything
and everythingfrom pharmaceuticals to mental illness to
specialities such as paediatrics and even complementary medicines
and practices.
And, after more than
10 years on the air, the panel still finds topics to chew the
fat over every week.
'There are always
issues that come up in the media, developments in techniques or
new scientific discoveries.
'Things change very
rapidly in healthcare, so there is always something new to talk
about,' Dr Selzer said.
'Really, it's just
a chance for us to chat to people we find interesting, about things
we find interesting.
'And hopefully our
listeners can learn something along the way. We certainly do.'
Radiotherapy airs on 102.7FM RRR every Sunday between
10 and 11a.m.
