An innovative strategy which focuses on the right of inclusion for people with a disability looks at all aspects of their life, including health and community services, recreation, education, employment, transport, housing and justice.

Launched by Community Services and Housing Minister Bronwyn Pike the Victorian State Disability Plan 2002–2012 sets out a plan for a stronger, more inclusive Victoria by the year 2012.

The plan, which involved the contributions of more than 3,000 Victorians, provides a blueprint for greater community inclusion for people with a disability. It also aims to remove the barriers to people’s full participation in community life.

Ms Pike said the strategy had historical significance.

‘This is the first disability plan in the history of Victoria to address the needs of people with a range of disabilities including intellectual, physical and sensory disabilities, acquired brain injury and neurological impairments.’

The State Disability Plan also takes a whole-of-government and whole-of-community approach to disability.

‘Over the next decade, Victorian government departments will forge stronger working partnerships with each other, the service sector and other organisations as well as with local communities to build a Victoria that works together to fulfil the aspirations of people with a disability.’
