A $5.4 million social housing project will provide high-quality
accommodation for older people in Caulfield.
The innovative joint venture between the State Government and the
City of Glen Eira was announced by Premier Steve Bracks and Housing
and Community Services Minister Bronwyn Pike.
It will replace 24 ageing bed-sit units built in 1960 with 30 purpose-built
units for local older people.
Through the Office of Housings Social Housing Innovations
Project (SHIP), the Government is providing funding of $3.13 million
with the council providing the land worth $2.27.
Ms Pike said the project was one of the largest developments so
far under the Governments $94.5 million SHIP funding.
The SHIP project is a successful collaboration with councils
and community groups to provide affordable accommodation for low-income
Victorians, Ms Pike said.
By pooling our resources, were achieving more than
either partner could individually and helping more people find a
place to call home.
The project will involve the demolition of 24 existing units in
Curraweena Road, Caulfield South.
The housing development is expected to be completed by December
2003.
This unique partnership is providing more secure and affordable
housing for older people on low incomes in Caulfield, Mr Bracks
said.
The Government is responding to the individual needs of local
communities and investing in new housing to boost local jobs and
building activity.
