Older people in Dandenong have voiced their opinions about the issues that affect their lives and wellbeing.

They took part in the first public forum—at the Dandenong Community Arts Centre—initiated by the new Ministerial Advisory Council of Senior Victorians.

The 14-member Council was formed earlier this year to work with the Victorian Government on ways to deal with ageism and improve the quality of life, health and services for older people.

Minister for Aged Care Bronwyn Pike said the public forums would allow older people to express their views on a range of issues including transport and health services and reducing age discrimination.

‘The Government wants older people to come along and say what they think about issues affecting their lives and wellbeing.’

The Council, chaired by Janet Wood, will inform Ms Pike about issues raised at the forums.

The Council will also provide feedback to relevant local organisations.

‘The forums will allow older people to share their opinions with their peers, who can understand the opportunities and obstacles of older age,’ Ms Wood said.

‘The Council is made up of senior Victorians and we are here to listen to other older people and to convey their ideas and opinions to the Minister.’
