Grants facilitate legal assistance

Victorians with disabilities will have easier access to legal information and advice through a State Government grant.

Announcing $50,656 for Geelong’s Villamanta Legal Service while visiting the centre, Community Services Minister Christine Campbell said it would also help educate the community on legal obligations to improve disability access to services and facilities.

‘The State grant will facilitate the needs of people with a disability through key rural organisations such as councils, human services, business and legal services.’

The money is in addition to $18,000 already approved for Villamanta to upgrade computers and other improvements.

‘Country people with disabilities often experience greater isolation, inequality and marginalisation than their counterparts in metropolitan areas.

‘The one-off funding through the Human Services Department’s DisAbility Services will help this respected Geelong service provide legal information and training to rural and regional communities.

‘Villamanta, with its specialist knowledge and understanding of the Barwon-South West region, is uniquely placed to promote regional and rural development.

‘The $50,656 will assist people with disabilities to become an integral part of their community.’

Villamanta Legal Services advises and supports Victorians with a disability, their families and carers who may not have the resources to access information about the law.

‘Without Villamanta, many people with disabilities would be unable to have access to any legal assistance.’
