Seminar promotes diet against disease

Menzies School of Health Research Director Professor Kerin O’Dea is an advocate of a Mediterranean diet as a means of heart disease prevention.

Professor O’Dea will present the latest research findings on the influence of this type of diet on the risk factors associated with heart disease at the Autumn Chris Silagy Seminar on April 1.

The free one-hour seminar is hosted by the Monash Institute of Health Services Research in honour of its Foundation Director, the late Professor Chris Silagy.

The seminar targets clinicians, policy-makers, media and consumers with an interest in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Professor O’Dea’s Diet versus Drugs for the Secondary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease presentation will highlight the effect of the Mediterranean diet on inflammation, oxidation and arrhythmia and its potential to reduce mortality without side-effects.

Professor O’Dea has more than 25 years’ experience in researching the impact of diet and lifestyle on the prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases such as type two diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.
