$20 million helps children tackle abuse trauma
A landmark new $20 million therapy service is helping children
and young people cope with the trauma of severe child abuse and
neglect.
Community Services Minister Sherryl Garbutt said the Take Two service,
funded by the Government over four years, began treating abused
children and young people in January with intensive psychological,
psychiatric and counselling services.
Take Two is the first dedicated therapeutic service
for child protection clients in Victoria and will provide a lifeline
to young victims of abuse, Ms Garbutt said.
Each year, the service will provide intensive treatment to
around 700 children and young people to help them cope with the
trauma of abuse, and to manage longer-term behavioural and emotional
problems.
Abused children will suffer a range of emotional and psychological
problems well into adulthood without proper treatment.
Take Two is reaching out to abused children to help
them deal with their pain and go on to lead fulfilling lives.
Vulnerable children and young people are referred to Take Two
by Child Protection Services.
Take Two is being delivered in partnership with the Austin
Child Adolescent and Mental Health Service, Berry Street Victoria,
La Trobe University and Victorian Child Psychiatry Training Department.
