Department of Human Services Secretary Patricia Faulkner has joined the palliative care sector in congratulating Jennifer Theisinger on her Australia Day Public Service Medal Award.

Ms Theisinger received her award for outstanding public service and innovation in the field of palliative care administration.

A large part of Ms Theisinger’s decade-long career with the Departments of Health and Human Services involved the redevelopment and expansion of palliative care services in Victoria.

She also was part of the team that developed sub-acute and specialist services programs for the Department.

Ms Faulkner said Ms Theisinger played a significant role in the way palliative care services are now provided in Victoria.

‘Ms Theisinger’s contribution fostered close working relationships between inpatient and community services, ensuring continued success of the program.

‘Her efforts have provided a strong foundation for the future of the palliative care system in Victoria, as well as contributing to the development of palliative care services nationally,’ Ms Faulkner said.

Mercy Hospice Chief Executive Officer Noala Flynn said Ms Theisinger’s ability to listen and communicate openly with service providers had gained her the utmost respect.

‘This strength was pivotal in the restructuring and growth of palliative care service delivery across the state.’

Associate Professor Sanchia Aranda of The University of Melbourne’s Centre for Palliative Care said Ms Theisinger had worked tirelessly in her role in the Department to oversee the redevelopment of palliative care services.

Ms Theisinger is currently Director of the national Office of the Commissioner of Complaints.
