Young people in the north-west region of Melbourne
are set to benefit from a recreation program announced during Housing
Week.
Organisations near
the Flemington and Fitzroy's Atherton Gardens housing estates
have been invited to apply for funding of up to $25,000 to set
up youth programs such as sporting clubs, youth choirs or a dance
group.
Minister for Housing
Candy Broad said the Housing Week recreational grant program would
give young people living on the housing estates a chance to engage
with their peers, learn new skills and positively contribute to
their community.
'We wanted to develop
a program that gave young people living on the Flemington and
Atherton Garden's housing estates the opportunity to become more
socially-involved through recreational activities such as soccer,
music or dance while helping them to develop a sense of belonging
with their neighbourhood.
'To kick start this
initiative, we will be providing Flemington's Eritrean community
with a Housing Week grant of $7,300 to help the group in its aim
of establishing a community soccer team comprising youth from
the Flemington housing estate.'
The Office of Housing's
North West Region will seek funding submissions from local organisations
on or near the Flemington and Atherton Gardens, Fitzroy housing
estates. Application forms will be available this month with submissions
due by end of August.
