Special service for veterans
|

Veteran Care Coordinator Denise Cosgriff with Les Platt from
Traralgon and Betty and Cedric Seakins from Kyneton.
|
The friendship that developed between veterans Les Platt and Cedric
Seakins helped them cope with treatment at the Peter MacCallum Cancer
Institute.
Mr Platt from Traralgon and Mr Seakins from Kyneton spent around
six weeks at the Institute.
While they were there, Veteran Care Coordinator Denise Cosgriff
lent a hand with their paperwork, answered questions and helped
them juggle appointment times, as well as encouraging them to exchange
reminiscences.
Ms Cosgriff, whose career has included nursing, community health
and project management, is an addition to Peter Macs Medical
Social Work Team.
Her appointment resulted from a Peter Mac decision to address the
specific needs of veterans, war widows and widowers being treated
at the hospital.
Because Mr Seakins, his wife Betty, and Mr Platt are from the country
and their stay extended over such a long time, Ms Cosgriff has been
a key contact.
My job is to offer support to veterans and their families
in what can be a difficult time.
There have been gaps in the system but by coordinating all
their services, listening to their needs and ensuring they are in
contact with other veterans I feel we can improve their hospital
experience.
Ms Cosgriff said listening to veterans war experience storiesover
a cup of tea and an ANZAC biscuit of coursewas a privilege
adding to the rewards of her role.
I hope we can raise the profile of veterans at Peter Mac
because they are special people, Ms Cosgriff said.
