Forums discuss arthritis management
|

Pupils from Appin Primary School entertained and educated
seminar delegates by presenting a series of exercises.
|
Public seminars organised by Arthritis Victorias Rural and
Regional Education Program (RARE) attracted 160 service users and
60 health professionals in Wangaratta.
The seminars were sponsored by the Rural City of Wangaratta and
the Department of Human Services and promoted through local health
care networks and pharmacies.
The purpose was to increase knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions
and their management, strengthen links with sufferers, empower local
leaders and help achieve a well-resourced community.
The local Arthritis Self Help Group members provided a strong view
during the discussion session.
Mayor Irene Grant, the Regions Primary Care Partnership and
the North East Division of General Practice all contributed to the
event.
Associate Professor Geoff McColl addressed both seminars, affirming
the strengths of the self-help model for the management of arthritis
and emphasising its appropriateness for isolated people and rural
communities.
A feature of the event was a visit from Arthritis Victorias
Healthy Bones Bus.
Appin Primary School hosted a program highlighting the importance
of exercise and diet to build strong bones.
Arthritis Victoria staff said the seminars succeeded in putting
local people in touch with their communitys resources and
staff provided clear follow-up for interested sufferers.
An Osteoporosis Prevention and Self Management Leader Training
Course will be held in Wangaratta on June 18 and 19.
The Rural and Regional Education Program will operate in four other
rural communities this year.
Arthritis Victoria will also conduct regular activities in partnership
with key rural community groups.
