Art at the heart of summer enjoyment
Children and adults spending respite time at Yoorallas Box
Hill Respite House learned mosaic art during the summer.
Professional mosaic artist Pam Irving spent a day a week teaching
while creating 10 Mosaic Masterpieces at the house.
House coordinator Kate Pensa said the project became a fantastic
experience for the Yooralla clients and staff.
Because Pam came weekly, almost all of our clients to had
an opportunity to work closely with a professional artist and really
feel a sense of ownership of the Mosaic Masterpieces. They really
look fantastic.
We try to make the respite experience as enjoyable and home-like
as possible for our clients with disabilities. The Mosaic Masterpieces
will be hung in the deck area for all our clients to enjoy,
said Ms Pensa.
Our clients parents also loved the project because
they could enjoy the break from care-giving duties and recharge
their batteries confident reliable and skilled support staff were
caring for the children who were having fun and trying new activities.
Disability is on the rise in Australiaaccording to a 1998
Bureau of Statistics study, 19 per cent of all Australians have
a disability.
