Forensic expert leads lecture team

Monash University’s dean of medicine, nursing and health sciences Professor Ed Byrne has announced the Dean’s and Alumni Lecture series for 2005.

This year’s series of public lectures, incorporating the second annual Rod Andrew Oration and the Great Alumni Debate, also introduces three of the faculty’s newly-appointed and highly-regarded professorial staff.

Professor Byrne said the Rod Andrew Oration would be given by one of Monash Medicine’s most respected academics—Professor of Forensic Medicine and Director of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Stephen Cordner.

Professor Cordner’s work in the arena of forensic medicine and human rights has seen him take tours of duty in East Timor and Kosovo, as well as a year consulting to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva.

Professor Cordner will share some of his experiences when he delivers his Forensic Pathology and Human Remains following War or Internal Violence: From Katyn Forest to Iraq lecture on May 10, at Monash University’s South 1 lecture theatre, Clayton campus.

Anyone interested in this area of medical science is invited to attend.

Also in this current series of lectures, medical training will come under the spotlight when media personality and Monash medical alumnus Dr Sally Cockburn moderates the Great Alumni Debate on Medical Education Today: What are the priorities and are we meeting them?

Further lectures will be given by Professors Harald Schmidt (pharmacology), Chris Goddard (social work) and Iain Clarke (physiology).

Lecture dates are Professor Stephen Cordner May 10, Professor Iain Clarke July 12, Great Alumni Debate August 9, Professor Harald Schmidt September 13 and Professor Chris Goddard, November 8.

All lectures will be held at Monash’s Clayton campus, starting at 6:30p.m.
