Book covers 150 years of nursing

A soon-to-be released book covers more than 150 years of nursing at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

being there—Nursing at Victoria’s First Hospital ‘The Melbourne’ will be launched by former Premier Joan Kirner on Friday, April 29 at The Atrium, Flemington Racecourse at 7.30p.m.

Author, Royal Melbourne Hospital nurse educator Sue Sherson, has spent several years researching and writing the history of nursing at Victoria’s first hospital.

She has also included many extraordinary personal stories in being there and a list of all nurses who graduated from the Royal Melbourne Hospital nursing school between 1890 and 1993—before nursing training moved to universities.

The hospital opened in 1848 as the Melbourne Hospital with a matron and two nurses.

being there discusses the constant social change, developing professionalism and women’s rights and excellence in nursing care.
