A Willingham welcome to Wippa Court

The new Wippa Court, Ashwood, public housing units are sited to make the most of the winter sun so they stay warmer longer.

Peter and Dorothy Willingham are proud and eager to talk about their new home in suburban Ashwood.

And when the opportunity came to show Housing and Aged Care Minister Bronwyn Pike through their two-bedroom public housing unit, the Willinghams were happy to welcome her as their guest.

The Willinghams’ unit is one of 10 built by the Office of Housing on land formerly occupied by two houses.

Construction of the new units—specifically for older people—cost $650,000.

The development allows residents to enjoy independent, secure living in a neighbourhood close to transport, shops and community facilities.

All units include grab-rails, slip-resistant flooring, allowance for wheelchair access and other safety features to ensure residents are secure and comfortable.

As well, modifications have been made to the Willinghams’ unit to help Peter, who is partially disabled, maintain an independent lifestyle.

The Wippa Court units, four of which have two bedrooms, are sited to make the most of winter sun so that they stay warmer for longer—helping to save on energy bills and contribute to more energy-smart, sustainable communities.

Outside, private open spaces and landscaping complete the development, providing a community environment for all the residents.

Ms Pike said it was vital for some public housing to be purpose-built for older people.

‘Twenty years from now, a quarter of all Victorians will be over the age of 60,’ Ms Pike said.
