New units for old on Ashburton estate

The Office of Housing has allocated $8.5 million to demolish and replace public and social housing stock in Ashburton’s Victory Boulevard public housing estate.

Housing and Aged Care Minister Bronwyn Pike has announced that the 56 outdated units in eight blocks of walk-up units built in the 1950s will be demolished and replaced with a blend of public and private homes.

The Office of Housing will now begin working with residents to ensure a smooth transition in relocating to neighbouring areas.

Demolition of the existing buildings could begin as early as June.

Construction of new public housing is expected to begin later next year, subject to council approval.

About 34 public units are planned for the area close to Warrigal Road and 10 private homes on the rest of the site.

It is expected that the new development will be completed by 2004.

‘Sale of part of the site to a private developer will help offset the overall cost,’ Ms Pike said.

The proposed transformation into affordable, appropriate and modern housing is in keeping with the Government’s aim to progressively improve ageing public estates and ensure new ones are well-located and appropriate to community facilities.

The redevelopment is based on recommendations of a community advisory committee, chaired by Bob Stensholt MP.

Redevelopment options under review include two-bedroom older persons units to help meet the needs of seniors and people with disabilities, who may need to accommodate a carer or relative.
