Overview

The Victorian Population Health Survey for People with an Intellectual Disability 2009 (VPHS-ID) is an important project that will gather data between July – October 2009 to compare the health and wellbeing of people with an intellectual disability with the health and wellbeing of the general Victorian population. The survey will provide high quality and important evidence which will help to raise awareness about the health status of people with intellectual disabilities.

How will it work?

  • Approximately 4600 adults with an Intellectual Disability aged 18 years or over will be randomly selected across Victoria to participate in the survey.
  • Computer assisted telephone interview that replicates the general Victorian Population Health Survey will be conducted with a proxy respondent, who has facilitated gathering answers from a person with an Intellectual Disability.
  • The interview will take approximately 30 minutes and will gather information about:
    • General physical and mental health
    • Health care checks
    • Nutrition, alcohol, smoking, physical activity
    • Asthma, diabetes, cancer screening
    • Eye care
    • Social and community characteristics

When will the findings be reported?

A comprehensive report will be available after January 2010.
