Protecting our drinking water catchments

The actions of people living in, or visiting, our drinking water catchment areas can have a significant impact on the drinking water supply of downstream communities. Poor quality drinking water can affect public health.

Protect our waters - protect our health: Highlighting the importance of preventing stock access to natural waterways.

Preventing stock access to natural waterways in drinking water catchment areas helps protect our drinking water supplies. It is also an integral part of good land management. The attached pamphlet highlights this, as well as the benefits stock exclusion can achieve, what landholders can do and who can be contacted for financial assistance.

Protect our waters – protect our health: A guide for landholders on managing land in drinking water catchments.

Controlling the entry of various contaminants into waterways helps protect the health of downstream communities by improving river water quality. The appropriate management of land within drinking water catchments also:
  • helps create sustainable farming practices
  • is likely to save money on farm operations
  • has a positive impact on the overall environment
  • creates healthier, better-looking and therefore more valuable land.
This booklet is a publication developed by the Department of Health in consultation with the Department of Sustainability and Environment, the Department of Primary Industries, the EPA, and several water corporations and catchment management authorities. It details the important actions that should be taken when managing land in a drinking water catchment.

Some of the actions landholders are encouraged to take to manage their land effectively and protect drinking water supplies for the community are:

  • improving the condition of waterway frontages via revegetation
  • preventing stock access to waterways
  • adequately maintaining onsite wastewater treatment systems (e.g. septic tanks)
  • preventing soil erosion
  • using and managing nutrients wisely
  • optimising agricultural chemical use
  • planning and developing land thoughtfully.
The management practices detailed in this booklet are relevant to water catchments in general, not just drinking water catchments.

The booklet also highlights who can be contacted for financial assistance, and also contains a wide range of resources to further assist landholders.

Public health issues associated with stock accessing waterways upstream of drinking water off-takes

Stock access to streams has the potential to adversely impact on water quality. The purpose of this study was to assemble objective evidence and provide defensible guidance relating to the assessment and management of public health risks associated with stock accessing waterways upstream of drinking water off-takes. The report quantifies the risk and provides a range of options by which the risk can be managed.

The report is being made available in order to assist water corporations with the management of risks that may impact on drinking water quality.
