Water fluoridation in Victoria and Australia

Overview

Since 2004, towns that have commenced water fluoridation are: Robinvale, Moe, Morwell, Sale, Warragul, Traralgon, Horsham, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Castlemaine and Warrnambool

In 2009, the following towns are expected to commence water fluoridation: Yarrawonga, Hamilton, Ballarat, Geelong, Colac, Swanhill, Kerang and Mildura

To confirm if fluoride is added to a particular town’s water supply visit the Fluoride by postcode page.

  • The first Australian water fluoridation program commenced in 1953 in Beaconsfield, Tasmania.
  • More than three quarters of Victorians have water with either naturally-occurring or added fluoride
  • Portland, Nhill, Port Fairy, Barnawartha and Kaniva have naturally-occurring optimal amounts of fluoride in the water supplies.
  • Most Australians have had the benefit of water fluoridation for 30–50 years. Melbourne has had fluoridated drinking water since 1977.

Currently more than 80 per cent of Australians have optimally fluoridated water.
