Improving child protection responses to family violence

In response to the Victorian Royal Commission into Family Violence, the Department of Health and Human Services is identifying ways to improve child protection practice and systems to better respond to family violence.

A Child Protection Family Violence Steering Committee (Steering Committee) has been established to oversee the implementation of key recommendations relating to child protection practice and systems including:

  • strengthened practice guidelines to facilitate further engagement with perpetrators of family violence including improved inter-agency collaboration with Victoria Police and relevant service providers (recommendation 25)
  •  strengthening existing child protection practice advice and requirement for practitioners to complete strong safety plans (recommendation 26)
  • improved information sharing with Victoria Police and specialist family violence services when a report to child protection has indicated the presence of family violence (recommendation 27)

The child protection manual has been updated to include new information on working with families where there is family violence.

These updates include new practice advice, a procedure and practitioner tip sheet focused on working with perpetrators of family violence and planning for child safety, significant updates to information regarding family violence services, and tips on receiving, registering and processing reports.

As work continues to enhance child protection’s responses to family violence, further updates will be made available on the manual.
