Building Aboriginal Cultural Competence (BACC) training

BACC image

The BACC training programs aim to embed cultural respect dot paintingand understanding into policy development, service delivery and people management to improve outcomes for Aboriginal people in Victoria. The department recognises that knowledge, skills and awareness are considered key enablers to empowerment and respect.

The BACC supports federal and Victorian government policy approaches to addressing systematic disadvantage experienced by Aboriginal people and is an opportunity for service provider and funded agency staff to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of Aboriginal culture, traditions and practices.

Training programs

The BACC will be delivered by the Koorie Heritage Trust (KHT) and Kangan Batman TAFE Indigenous Education Centre.

There will be two one-day BACC training programs delivered from 2011 until 2012. These are:

  • Introduction to Aboriginal Culture – Foundation Program
  • BACC Policy and Partnership Development Program.

Introduction to Aboriginal Culture – Foundation training program, the earlier Cultural Respect Training program or a similar program is a pre requisite to attend the Policy and Partnership Development Program.

An Introduction to Aboriginal Culture – Leadership Focus program is in development and is aimed at sector leaders, recognising that they have a vital role in supporting Aboriginal cultural inclusion and respect.

KHT will deliver the rural foundation programs, all policy and partnership programs and, leadership focus programs, in consultation with regional Aboriginal organisations. Kangan Batman TAFE Indigenous Education Centre will deliver metropolitan Foundation programs.

It is expected that approximately 3,500 people will participate in this training over the next three years.

Who can attend?

Any service provider and funded agency staff that work with the department can attend the training. The BACC training program is especially recommended for staff who work with Aboriginal clients or colleagues.
