This section is a guide for public housing tenants to let you know about what services the Department of Human Services - Housing provides and how we manage rental housing. It also looks at your responsibilities as a tenant and our responsibilities as a landlord.
Rights and responsibilities
As a tenant of a Department of Human Services - Housing property you are expected to observe the rights and responsibilities outlined in your tenancy agreement. This includes how you look after your property, being a good neighbour and the types of changes you need to let us know about.
Rent
Every person living in public housing must pay rent. Find out more about the types of rent, how rent is calculated, what to do if your household income changes, how you can pay your rent and what to do if you are finding it difficult to pay your rent.
Maintenance and improvements
The Department of Human Services - Housing is required to keep our properties in good condition and as a public housing tenant you are required to complete smaller more routine maintenance. Find out how to request maintenance from the Housing Call Centre, how long repairs will take and how you can make modification's to your home.
Support services
There are a number of support services available to public and social housing tenants who need help. This includes financial assistance to buy household goods such as fridges, and concessions for tenants who wish to particiation in government funded training and courses.
Moving, buying, transferring
After becoming a public housing tenant your circumstances may change, which means your housing needs may also change. There are a number of options available for tenants who would like to move, buy or transfer.
Employment and training
Training and employment opportunites are available to helps public housing tenants to develop skills with a focus on improving employment potential.

Use of electoral enrolment details
To facilitate the assessment of entitlement to public housing, and in accordance with section 34 of the Electoral Act 2002, the Victorian Electoral Commissioner has provided the enrolment details of electors (excluding silent electors) enrolled at a number of addresses specified by the Department of Human Services.
