Self-directed planning for people with a disability
Disability Services is working on how disability supports can be provided in so they are more flexible and individualised. This includes how people with a disability decide what they need and plan for their supports, and how they can direct this process to the maximum extent possible (self-directed planning). Disability Services Division is finalising a framework for how self-directed planning supports will be provided.
Information on the framework is provided on the Disability Services - Self-directed planning information sheet page, linked below.
Disability Services has undertaken a consultation process to hear from people with a disability, their families and carers, disability service providers and other interested community members to gather their views on the framework. A series of consultation sessions were held across the state throughout June and feedback was also able to be provided through this website throughout July. Disability Services would like to thank everyone who provided feedback through the consultation sessions and the website.
The feedback provided throughout the consultation process will inform the future direction of self-directed planning for people with a disability in Victoria. The feedback was compiled into a report by Success Works, who were engaged by Disability Services to conduct the consultation process, to provide an overview and analysis of the feedback received.
Linking self-directed planning with community building
As disability supports become more flexible and individualised, people are exploring how they can become more active members of their communities. The information that people identify in their self-directed plans can be useful in helping to plan and build more inclusive communities.
The following tip sheets provide some ideas for how disability support professionals, including planners, facilitators, case managers, day service staff and others can help to build inclusive communities.
- Changes to disability supports
Reorientation of supports information - improving the disability system to be more flexible, and to provide greater choice and control for people with a disability.
