What is the Video Relay Interpreting (VRI) service?
The new Video Relay Interpreting (VRI) service provides sign (Auslan) and spoken language interpreting over the internet.
The Australian Sign Language, or Auslan, is the natural language of the Australian Deaf community. Auslan has evolved over time to meet communication needs. It uses hand shapes, movements, facial expressions and orientation.
Deaf people who use Auslan can be at risk of misinformation or lack of information to make informed decisions when a professional interpreter is not available.
VRI service makes it possible for deaf people to communicate in Auslan with hearing people in the same room in various situations such as a health professional, legal service or job interview via a remote Auslan interpreter.

Testimonials about the VRI service
The response from VRI users has been positive.
"It was just like a real person was there. I could sit back and be comfortable."
"Before VRI, if I wanted an interpreter I would be told it could take some time. If I needed someone straight away, I would use an unqualified person, frustrating. VRI is really fantastic. Very professional and confidential."
