Think Women for Local Government

The Think Women for Local Government 2012 project is being funded by the Victorian Government and coordinated by the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA).

The overreaching goal of the project is to increase the numbers and diversity of women candidates in Victoria’s 79 local government elections in 2012.

Currently, less than 30 per cent of Victorian councillors are women. Six councils have no female representation, and in 14 councils there is only one female representative.

The VLGA is working with rural, regional and metropolitan local councils, and peak local government organisations to provide information sessions, workshops, resources and mentoring that will raise women’s awareness of local government candidacy and encourage women to run for the 2012 local government elections.

The project aims to have:

  • At least one woman candidate in 90 per cent of Victoria’s 297 local government (wards and un-subdivided municipalities)
  • A supply of well prepared female candidate base for the 2016 elections
  • Resources and networks for potential women candidates and newly elected women councillors.

Regional forums for potential candidates and supporters are being held across Victoria in 2011-12.
