With renewed interest in the Victorian floods as the 12 month mark approaches, support for family and friends might be as simple as listening to their concerns.
Experienced disaster counsellor, Rob Gordon said that this type of anniversary can bring both positive and negative emotions to the surface. For many people who were caught in the floods last year, that could mean it is a time of struggle.
“In the early phase of recovering from disasters such as the floods and storms that hit Victoria last year, most people make a positive recovery. However, some people continue to experience difficulties weeks and months after the event and leading up to the 12 month anniversary this could become more evident,” Rob said.
“It’s important to recognise that family, friends, work colleagues or neighbours might need support as this landmark comes closer.
“People cope with traumatic events in their own way so their recovery might be different to those around them. Many people across Victoria who were affected by the flood and storm events might not realise they haven’t fully dealt with the stress this caused.
“If you are noticing that you or someone you know is more restless than usual or having trouble sleeping – these are some of the signs that could suggest you should seek help and support.
Specific flood recovery support and counselling services are still available and support from a local doctor or mental health service provider is always available.
“Some people might prefer to just talk to a friend or family member rather than seek professional support. This can often be very effective so if you think you can offer support to someone who seems to need a shoulder to lean on, offer a hand – lend an ear,” said Rob.
Flood Support Workers are available in most municipalities throughout north-western and western Victoria to provide support or referral to a counsellor. Flood Support Workers are also still available to assist with advice and information on the wide range of services available for people still recovering from the floods.
