Course Profile

Personal Support - Professional Development

This one day course is designed to build on the existing professional training and skills of debriefers, defusers and practitioners who currently work with emergency affected individuals and families. Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the emergency affected individual
  • Practical tools for providing personal support
  • Supporting other staff
  • Handling difficult contacts
  • Looking after yourself

This course is conducted by Dr Rob Gordon, Consultant Psychologist for the Department of Human Services and a specialist in disaster management. The format of the day involves a mixture of lectures, small group work and exercises.

Prerequisite

To be eligible for enrolment you must have either completed the Introduction to Personal Support (conducted by DHS), have a relevant qualification or have relevant experience in the field.
