Harness Safety Project


Wheelchair and seating harnesses can be dangerous if they are not prescribed and used properly. The Victorian Harness Safety Working Group has developed guidelines and a brochure for harness users and those who support them.

There are various supports available to people who need assistance.

  • Disability Equipment Information System (DEIS) (Yooralla website external site) is a comprehensive database of assistive technology available in Victoria. Maintained by the Independent Living Centre, the DEIS contains information on disability items, agencies and providers.
  • Motor Neurone Disease Association of Victoria (external link) provides a range of disability aids and equipment to assist people with Motor Neurone Disease, to maintain their independence while remaining in the accommodation of their choice.
  • Auslan Firealarm subsidy (external link) issues fire alarms to people who are profoundly deaf.
  • Continence Support Service aims to promote, restore and maintain continence in children and young people with a disability by providing clinical assessment, intervention planning and management support in relation to continence issues.
  • Continence Aids Assistance Scheme (external link) is an Australian Government program that assists eligible people who have permanent and severe incontinence, to meet some of the costs of continence products.
  • Disability Online Service Directory (external link) will help you find community support, services and/or health practitioners.
  • Vision Australia (external link) provides a range of disability aids and equipment to assist people with vision impairment to maintain their independence in the community.
