Organisational self-assessment

Organisational self-assessment was compulsory under the Quality Framework (1997).

When new Outcome Standards were introduced under the Disability Act 2006, the Quality Framework was revised and service providers are now required to undertake organisational self-assessment against both the Industry Standards and Outcome Standards.

Organisational self-assessment may be carried out in many ways. Service providers are encouraged to select an approach that best reflects the service type and consumer requirements.

This may involve:

  • Integrating the essential evidence indicators into the organisational self-assessment component of an existing quality system
  • Establishing a new quality system
  • Using the self-assessment matrix contained in the Quality Framework Resource Guide.

Whatever approach is selected, self-assessment should be used to drive both quality assurance and continuous quality improvement.

Service providers are encouraged to consider the following when selecting an approach to self-assessment:

  • Focusing on the areas of life important to people that inspires us to consider how our organisation influences a range of domestic, social, cultural, recreational, vocational, health and wellbeing outcomes for people with a disability
  • The areas of good practice important to organisations that give us dimensions of measurement, which we can use to review and evaluate the business activities, policies, systems and processes that support our practice.

What happened to the Disability Self-Assessment System?

From July 2008 the Disability Self-Assessment System (DSAS) is no longer recognised. All disability service providers are required to self-assess against the Standards for Disability Services in Victoria, incorporating both Outcome Standards and Industry Standards. Service providers may use any self-assessment and consumer-assessment processes that have the capacity to demonstrate compliance with the Standards.
