Background to the Direct Payments Project

The Direct Payments Project developed and trialled direct payments in partnership with a group of people with a disability, families and carers in Southern Metropolitan Region, known as the Direct Payments Consultants Group.

A description of the project, information about the Direct Payments Consultants Group and updates on the progress of the project, are available:

Definition of direct payments

Direct payments is the transfer of an agreed amount of funding directly to a person with a disability, a family member or carer. The person with a disability is then able to manage the selection and purchasing of supports in line with an agreed plan. Direct payments gives people with a disability flexibility and control over their supports and services.

It will be an option in the future for people with a disability to choose to administer their funding. The other options available are funding to a financial intermediary or to a service provider or a combination of options.
