Patient travel

The Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme provides a subsidy to assist rural and remote Victorians with travel and accommodation costs incurred when travelling more than 100 kilometres (one way) or 500 kilometres per week if receiving treatment in a block of at least five weeks. An approved patient escort may also be eligible for assistance for travel and accommodation costs.

Eligibility

You must hold at least one of the following concession cards:

    Pensioner Concession Card; Health Care Card; DVA Gold Card; DVA White Card; Victorian Seniors Card; Commonwealth Senior Health Card

Residents in rural and remote areas who have a current referral to the nearest medical or dental specialist or approved place of treatment.

How to apply

Application forms can be obtained from local doctors, hospital social workers and DHS rural regional offices.

  • Do I get the full reimbursement amount for patient travel?

    No. The Victorian Patient Transport Scheme (VPTAS) provides partial reimbursement to assist with travel and accommodation costs incurred by rural patients and if appropriate, their escorts, when travelling long distances or staying away from home to receive specialist medical treatment.
