Role & Function

The Health Information Provision Unit is the Department’s authoritative source for hospital-related information. The Unit provides information and reporting services to the Department and external agencies for service development, planning and monitoring, health research, and hospital funding and other purposes.

The Unit manages, maintains and develops the VHIRS data warehouse and provides information from the key Victorian hospital unit record data collections including:

• Victorian Admitted Episode Dataset (VAED)
• Victorian Emergency Minimum Dataset (VEMD)
• Elective Surgery Information System (ESIS)
• Mental Health (CMI/ODS)
• Aggregate patient and finance data through the Agency Information Management System (AIMS).

The Unit provides advice regarding Departmental health information including:

• Availability and appropriate application of Victorian health information (including linkage of data sets)
• Development of ad hoc and standard reports and data extracts to meet business information needs
• Ongoing maintenance and continuous improvement of DHS health information systems.

Other responsibilities include:

• Regular provision of statutory reporting and data to external agencies including:
• Commonwealth Department of Health and Family Services as required under the Australian Health Care Agreement
• Australian Institute of Health and Welfare as required under the National Health Information Agreement
• Deriving information for interstate cross-border patient flows which impact on funding arrangements
• Supporting the negotiation of funding agreements with external agencies
