6.9 Quality Performance Indicators
In line with the recommendations of the 1995 report A New Framework for Quality in Victoria's Public Hospitals, the Department will seek to develop and implement a set of key quality performance indicators, including those with a consumer focus, to ensure consistency of information across the hospital system and facilitate benchmarking and continuous improvement.
A staged approach both for development and implementation of quality performance indicators will be adopted. As a first step, a strategic framework which informs future direction will be developed. This framework will:
- Be broadly based.
- Not be limited to existing collections.
- Build on and integrate with other work on performance indicator development.
- Be consistent with program objectives.
- Be capable of implementation within reasonable time frames.
A discussion document will be circulated to the industry for comment in early 1997-98.
