Section A: Policy
4.5 Further Developments
In 1997-98 the Department, in consultation with Networks and hospitals, will continue the Outpatient Services Review. The Review's aim is to set a policy framework for the planning and development of outpatient services and promote improvement in the delivery of these services. It will assist in articulating the service requirements, service models and linkages necessary to deliver effective outpatient services.
In 1996-97, the Review commenced with the commissioning of a literature review, Non-Admitted Patient Services: A Literature Review and Analysis. This report highlights some key themes for the reform of outpatient services. This report will be released shortly. A round of consultative forums will also be held for Network/hospital staff to identify key issues affecting outpatient services provision.
Additional components of the Review will include:
- A consultancy to investigate the socio-demographic and health status characteristics of public outpatients.
- The production of a discussion paper which will describe the key issues to be addressed in reform of outpatient services. Responses from the sector will be sought to this discussion paper.
