3.3 Same Day Cost Weights

While the overall number of same day/one night DRGs remains unchanged, some DRGs have changed in their classification.

Prior to the development of the 1997-98 cost weights a review of same day/one night DRGs was undertaken by the Department. While statistical criteria were used to identify AN-DRGs that potentially require re-classification, the decision to reclassify DRGs was based upon clinical advice. It was thought necessary to classify a number of relatively short stay DRGs where admission criteria were difficult to define as 'same day' DRGs to prevent relatively simple cases from inappropriately lowering the weights for more complex cases.

Three additional same day DRGs (AN-DRGs 445, 792 and 797) and one additional one night DRG (AN-DRG 923) have been created for 1997-98. However, based upon results from the 1996-97 Cost Weight Study four AN-DRGs were removed from the same day list (AN-DRGs 421, 762, 930 and 931). The Cost Weight Study reported no significant differences between the average cost of same day cases and the average cost of one night cases for these AN-DRGs.
