3.2 Same Day Medical
Throughput
Threshold levels of throughput for same day medical inpatients in a range of DRGs increased in 1996-97 but the caps will remain.
As in previous years there will be a maximum proportion of each hospital's throughput for specified same day WIES5 which will be counted towards achievement of total hospital throughput. In metropolitan areas this has been aggregated at the Network level. The scope of DRGs included in this target has remained at the 1995-96 level.
The Department will monitor activity data to ensure that patients are not retained in hospital overnight where previously such cases were cared for on a same day basis. Funding penalties may be imposed in cases where there is a significant shift from same day to overnight care. A list of same day-only categories is given in Section C.
